Corey E. Hayes – November 30, 2016

Corey E. Hayes, 50, of St. Marys, passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at his residence following a brief illness.

From the moment Corey was born he was an independent soul. In his early days he played Baseball: his stories of his love of the game were legendary. He loved sports and followed the Kings Hockey team religiously.

In his early 20s Corey went on to become a musician playing bass for two Glam Rock Bands that played in the infamous Sunset Strip clubs, opening for such notables as Guns N Roses and more.

In 1992 Corey met and married the love of his life Rhonda Crews, moving to Jacksonville Florida to start their life together, later moving to St Mary’s Georgia. Corey was known for his wit, dry sense of humor and his writing. Like his father, Corey wrote screenplays and stories that touched the heart and engaged curiosity for the complexities of the human condition. His writing continued until the time of his passing. Corey and Rhonda also owned and operated Mermaid Cleaning Service in St Mary’s Georgia.

Loved husband, brother, son in law and father to his “fur babies”, Corey Ellis Hayes, passed away in St Marys’ Georgia November 30th 2016. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Rhonda Hayes, as well as his sisters Rochelle Skala, Meredyth Hayes, and brother Garrett Hayes.

Mr. Shad was a veteran of both US Navy and US Marine Corps, and served until discharged in 1953 as staff sergeant. He fought in the Korean War landing on Poson Bay with the allied forces and 1st Marine Battalion both in infantry and flight mechanic serving with Pappy Boynton of the famous Black Sheep squadron and later with the Checkerboard squadron with Major Ed McMann. History recalls the enemy knew that the Marines had landed, they pushed the reds north, and had Manchuria in sight when MacArthur called them back to maintain the 38th parallel. He was later honorably discharged after being seriously injured in battle.

He and his wife Vila moved to St. Marys in 1953, where he was employed with Gilman Paper Company until his retirement as a pulp mill tour foreman in 1994. Throughout his career he was well thought of, a man of integrity and knowledge, and well respected. He was a dedicated and hardworking man who always provided for his family.

His greatest accomplishment was his family. His sensitive and unquenchable love for them all, which he always shared and enjoyed having them around him.  He was very proud of his family and would often tell stories about them and his adventures growing up. Each and every member of his family was very special to him, and he showed them with his untiring love.

Mr. Shad loved people and enjoyed being around others and helping them when in need. He was a member of the St. Marys Masonic Lodge #109 where he served as master in 1965. He was a 32 degree Scottish Rite mason a York Rite Mason and a Christian Knights Templar. He loved the Marine Corps, and enjoyed telling about the good times he had while he served.  He was a member of the Marine Corps League Kings Bay Detachment Southeast Georgia #1229. He loved these organizations and what they did to help others less fortunate.  He was well respected and touched the lives of countless people and left us all a lasting legacy.
