Charles E. Smith, 85, of Harrietts Bluff, passed away Monday, September 12, 2016 at his residence.
Born July 13, 1931 in Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late Dewey and Lola Younginer Smith. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Smith, two sons, Charles E. Smith, Jr., and Duane H. Smith, daughter, Susan C. Hardison, and sister, Hessie Mae Smith.
Coming from Charleston, SC, he retired to Camden County 2 1/2 years ago to live with his daughter. He was very active in football and baseball in his high school years, and later was inducted into the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame.
Mr. Smith was retired from the United States Navy with 20 years of service. He served his country honorably during the Vietnam Era and the Korean Conflict, receiving numerous medals and commendations. He also retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard with fifteen years of service.
Survivors include his daughter and son in law, Tonya and Perry Ray of Harrietts Bluff; eight grandchildren, Charles E. Smith, III, Cory Smith, Amber Eaton, Faith Renee Smith, Wendy Baker, Angie Baker, Casey Wessinger, and Ricky Wessinger; fifteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 17, 2016, at 4:00 pm, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys, with Pastor Greg Gardell officiating and with full Military Honors.
