Rufus Alexander Crawford, 81, of Kingsland, passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick after a brief battle with cancer.
Born June 7, 1933 in Cogdell, GA, he was the son of the late Estes “Bud” Crawford and Georgia Beverly Crawford. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Shaw, Doris Lance, and Frances Smiley.
Mr. Crawford spent his younger years in Waycross, GA where he met and married his future wife Merinda Barbee, also of Waycross. Rufus had been a resident of Camden County since 1959 where he worked for Gilman Paper Company, progressing to Power House Operator, and retired in 2000, with 41 years of service. Most important in his life was his family and especially his grandchildren. The work relationships he shared with his Gilman family were also very important and special to him. He was a member of the St. Marys United Methodist Church, and enjoyed Nascar racing, hunting, fishing, loved watching his beloved Georgia Bulldog football games, and going to the beach with his wife and family. Mr. Crawford was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Merinda Crawford of Kingsland; two daughters, Cathy Barker (Jeff) of St. Marys, and Cindy Peeples (Kevin) of Kingsland; brother, Grady Crawford (Pat) of Waycross; sisters, Norma Jean Griffin (Terry) of Fernandina Beach, FL and Wanda Carter (Henry) of Augusta, GA; grandchildren, Jonathan Barker (Amy), Matthew Barker, Kyndle Peeples Johnson (William), and Landen Peeples; great grandchildren, Kaylee Barker, Easton Barker, and Kaeden Johnson; along with many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2014, at 3 pm from the St. Marys United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Jones officiating. The family will receive friends at the church, beginning at 2 pm. Interment to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.

Honorary: Gilman Paper Company-Power House Employees, and special friend Bobby Paulk.
