James Morton Harris, 80, of St. Marys passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at his residence.
Born October 9, 1937 in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late Paul and Ruth Newman Harris, and has resided in St. Marys since 2004.
Jim received his Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois, and Master of Science at Nova Southeastern University. He was a territory manager with V. Mueller, a large national manufacturer of surgical instrumentation and equipment for operating rooms from 1963 to 1976. He founded and was president of Instrument Associates, Inc., a Florida distributor of specialty products for surgery from 1976 to 1996 In 1997 he founded and was president of Florida Surgical Specialties, Inc., where he remained until 2003.
Jim was a member of Independent Surgical Distributors of America, serving as President 1994 and 1995, and the Fellow American Society for Lasers in Medicine and Surgery; member of the Advisory Board of Florida Council of Perioperative Registered Nurses and Carl Zeiss Inc., Meadox Medicals, Inc., Luxtec Corp., and Endolase Inc. He was an avid Cubs fan, a member of King of Peace Episcopal Church and a veteran of the United States Army.
Memorial services will be held Monday, January 15, 2018 at 11:00 am at King of Peace Episcopal Church in Kingsland with Fr. Al Crumpton and Fr. John Rogers presiding. The family will receive friends following the services. An inurnment at Jacksonville National Cemetery with Military Honors will be held at a later date.
Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Betty J. Harris of St. Marys; three sons, Jim A. Harris of Deltona, FL, Randy L. Harris (Dawn) of Winter Springs, FL, and Brian E. Harris (Stephanie) of Raleigh, NC; six grandchildren: Justin, Jenn, Jordan, Hannah, Emma, and Jesse.
The family requests memorial contributions in memory of James M. Harris be made to King of Peace Episcopal Church, 6230 Laurel Island Pkwy, Kingsland, GA 31548, or Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Pkwy., Brunswick, GA 31525.
