George Keck Powell, MD, AAFP, FACS (ret.), Colonel US Army (ret.) 80 of Saint Mary’s GA., passed away August 20, 2019.
He served 26 years in the US Army as a trauma surgeon in Vietnam, also at Fort McPherson, Ga., Fort Knox, KY., Fort Bliss TX, and Fort Gordon, GA., and with NASA on ocean recoveries for Apollo and Skylab missions. He held an associate clinical professor positions at four different medical schools, became program director for surgical residency programs in El Paso, TX and Augusta, GA and finally served as surgical consultant to the Surgeon General of the US Army. He graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1964, Colorado College in 1960, and Aurora High School in Denver, Colorado in 1956.
He is survived by his wife Alice Jane Powell of 44 years, four children Katharine Ziegler, Robert Powell, Rebecca Powell, Benjamin Powell, four grandchildren, one great grandchild and a chosen sister and brother, Marsha and Larry Sherman. He was an avid fisherman, golfer, musician, world traveler and loved life, family and friends.
