They made their home in Lake Orion until 1984 when they retired and returned to the Onaway area.Gertrude worked for many years at Bortz Healthcare as a certified nursing assistant and as a housekeeper. She managed the Jamestown Apartments in Onaway and worked for the Presque Isle Council on Aging. Her most important work was being a wonderful mother, wife, and homemaker. There were two things that Gertrude was absolutely passionate about. First, she was passionate about her family. She thought the world of her boys and her grandchildren. She cherished every minute she spent with them. She was extremely close to her sisters. They married brothers. They traveled together. They lived together. And they shared their happy and sad times together. Secondly, she was passionate about her faith in God, prayer, and devotion to her church. Gertrude was a long time member of the Onaway Baptist Chapel and a member of the Brownstown Baptist Church in Kingsland, Georgia. Gertrude was crazy about playing Bingo. She played Bingo several nights a week and would drive to the next town if there was a Bingo game. She loved fishing and was able to go frequently with her son. Gertrude was a terrific baker and a great cook. She was known for making the best homemade noodles and serving them with her fried chicken, not to be outdone by one of her delicious homemade pies. And then there was crocheting. Gertrude always crocheted for her family, making hats, mittens, scarves, slippers, and afghans. At Christmas, family could always expect a crocheted gift made by Gertrude’s loving hands.
Surviving Gertrude are her two sons, Bob Stevens (Cindy DeRosia) of Onaway and Frank “Skinny” (Susan) Stevens of Kingsland, Georgia; step-son, Mike (Jeannie) McCreery of Ortonville; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; as well as her sisters, Charlotte Streeter of Onaway and Mary Wirgau of Rogers City; brother, Bill McClary of Onaway; and many nieces and nephews.
