Jack Newman, 87, of St. Marys passed away December 31, 2014 at St. Vincent’s in Jacksonville, FLorida.
Jack was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 11, 1927. He attended Catholic grammar school and high school and Loyola University. He received a Bachelor’s degree from DePaul University and a Master’s degree from George Washington University. Jack joined the Navy in 1953 and was commissioned an Officer after completing Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. His first duty stations included Pensacola, Florida, Athens, Georgia, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Supply Officer on the USS Barry. He was stationed at DGSC in Richmond, Virginia where he met his wife, Judy, and they had their first child, Lisa. They were then sent to HQ, DSA, in Alexandria Virginia, where their second child, Michael, was born. Jack’s last station was CBC in Gulfport, Mississippi where their third child, Kathy, was born. Jack’s medals include the Joint Services Commendation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He retired in 1974 and went to work for Raytheon and was moved back to the Northern Virginia area. He commuted 39 miles to Crystal City for over 20 years. Since 1995, Jack and Judy spent winters in Saint Marys, Georgia and then they moved to Osprey Cove in 1999 where they enjoyed golf trips and cruises with their wonderful friends. Jack was always the “go to” man and he had the patience of a saint. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church at 10 am. Interment will follow at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at 12:30 pm.
